When you’re newly pregnant and beginning prenatal care, your first obstetric visit at AllSafe Medical Group is the beginning of a partnership with your OB-GYN team that sets the tone for a healthy pregnancy.
When Should I Schedule My First OB Appointment?
We recommend scheduling your first prenatal appointment around eight to 10 weeks after the first day of your last period. If you’re unsure of your dates or experiencing symptoms like bleeding, pain, or severe nausea, we may ask you to come in sooner to check that everything is progressing safely.
Whether you planned your pregnancy or it was unexpected, receiving professional care starting in your first trimester can ease uncertainty and help you feel more grounded, supported, and ready for what’s next.
What to Bring With You
This first appointment covers a lot of ground, so arriving prepared helps us serve you better. We ask that you provide:
- A list of your current medications and supplements
- Information about your medical and surgical history
- The date of your last menstrual period (if known)
- Details of previous pregnancies or miscarriages
- Your insurance card and ID
- A list of questions or concerns you want to discuss
You’re also welcome to bring a partner, family member, or trusted friend if you prefer.
What Happens During the Visit?
If you aren’t already certain you’re pregnant, we’ll perform a simple urine or blood test. In most cases, we also conduct an early ultrasound during this visit to evaluate how the fetus is developing, detect a heartbeat, estimate gestational age, and provide an accurate due date. An ultrasound also allows us to check for twins or rule out early complications such as ectopic pregnancy.
We’ll also take time to understand your full health picture so we can tailor your prenatal care and anticipate potential risks. Your provider will ask detailed questions about your current and past medical conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disorders, asthma, or autoimmune issues. We’ll discuss:
- Previous pregnancies
- Medications or supplements you currently take
- Family history of genetic conditions or pregnancy-related issues
- Mental health history, including anxiety or depression
Physical Exam and Lab Testing
Depending on your history and last checkup, your provider may perform a brief physical exam that includes checking vital signs like your blood pressure. If you’re due for a Pap smear, we might offer to do that at this time.
You’ll also have your first set of prenatal labs, which typically include:
- Blood type and Rh factor
- Complete blood count to check for anemia
- Rubella and varicella immunity
- Hepatitis B and C screening
- HIV and syphilis testing
- Urine culture to check for infection
Genetic Screening Options
If you’re interested, we offer first-trimester screening to check for health conditions that may affect your baby. These diagnostics are optional and based entirely on your preferences, age, and medical history. We’ll walk you through the benefits and limitations of each test so you can make a confident, informed decision.
Options may include:
- Noninvasive prenatal testing for Down syndrome and other chromosomal conditions
- Checking for genetic conditions like cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia
- Nuchal translucency ultrasound, done between 11 and 13 weeks
Lifestyle Guidance and Safety Tips
Pregnant people often ask about what is safe or unsafe for a developing baby. Your provider will offer personalized advice about nutrition, fitness, lifestyle adjustments, and which foods or substances to avoid.
We’ll also check in on your mental health, especially if you experience stress, anxiety, or mood changes.
Creating Your Pregnancy Care Plan
Before you leave, we’ll explain in detail about what you can look forward to in the months ahead.
- Your estimated due date
- A schedule of follow-up visits
- Timing for future ultrasounds and lab work
- Instructions on which medications or supplements to take
- Guidance on what your first trimester will be like
You’ll also receive instructions for when to call our office between visits. While not all symptoms are abnormal, contact us right away if you experience:
- Heavy vaginal bleeding
- Severe abdominal or pelvic pain
- Persistent vomiting with signs of dehydration
- High fever or chills
- Sudden dizziness, chest pain, or shortness of breath
